American actor, stand-up comic, and novelist Richard Jay Belzer lived from August 4, 1944, until February 19, 2023.
He is most known for playing the roles of BPD Detective, NYPD Detective/Sergeant, and DA Investigator John Munch in the NBC police drama series Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
He has also made guest appearances on a number of other programmes. From 1993 till his retirement in 2016, he acted as the part for 23 years.

Belzer was born to a Jewish household in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He said that his mother routinely beat him and his brother and that his attempt to make his mother laugh as a way of getting her to stop beating them was the beginning of his comedic career.
Belzer began working as a reporter for the Bridgeport Post after completing his studies at Fairfield Warde High School.
Richard has a brother named Leonard Belzer.
